Protoform: AFAA [MP] Storm, hurricane

Description: Storm, hurricane
Reconstruction: Reconstructs to MP: Malayo-Polynesian
Notes:

*3 PEO *yavara (Gty. 1983), *yavaRat "storm" (Gty:1990:81).
*4 POC *apaRat "northwest wind; wet season when northwesterlies blow and sea is rough" (LPO II:129,259,307).
*5 PMP *habaRat "southwest monsoon" (ACD).
*6 PAN *SabaRat "south wind (?)" (ACD).
*8 Note: MAO, RAR and TUA are the only EP languages with putative reflexes and all are suspect. The word first appeared in 2nd ed. of Williams's Maori Dictionary WD2 ...wha "a gale; rain without wind (E.C.)", WD3 awhaa "Ka
ua te awha", WD4 aawhaa. Only example given "ka ua te awha" said to mean "the rain rains". No other early Maori examples discovered, but the word occurs in at least one Maori hymn of which Mick Jones said "I've always wondered what that word meant.
"
The TUA word has the note [? _ faa (iv)]. It is the wrong shape -- should be ahaa not aafaa -- and the meaning is astray. For RAR (Sve.) has aa "a heavy gale accompanied by rain". The word is not in (Bse.), but (Mka.) remembers his father talking of `aa
`aa matangi with reference to bad weather.
